The Little Boy Who WALKS!

October 13, 2015  •  4 Comments

Two years ago, I got the opportunity to share the story of an amazing, strong, determined little boy.  The baby boy who had little chance of ever having controlled muscle movement, turned into the little boy who smiles (read more about that here: http://www.michellemcmillan.com/blog/2013/8/the-little-boy-who-smiles), and who continues to beat all the odds.  He has become the little boy who WALKS, and who does so much more!  His life is a constant reminder to all of us that miracles really do happen.

The little boy's name is Korbyn, and he turned three this year.

Korbyn continues to reach milestones the medical community thought he never would.  This little guy has a personality that I just cannot describe.  He is so happy and full of life - a little charmer of a guy, really.  But, he is also a typical three year old little boy - headstrong, independent, and possessing that 3-year old attitude that so many of us parents know all too well!

I have to say that I was deeply inspired by this little guy during the photo shoot.  About half way into our time together, we moved to an area in our local park with steps.  I watched as he was determined to get down a step.  It was extremely difficult for him, but he did not want help.  "I can do it", he told us.  My heart swelled with pride as I watched him conquer the challenge of getting down that step.

It was so humbling to watch him as I could see the difficulty in that simple task, but at the same time I could see the determination he possessed to finish it independently.  He was not going to give up.  I think this is the story of his life so far - not giving up - and what an incredible message that is for all of us.

Some of Korbyn's recent milestones:

  • Walking - Korbyn began walking while holding on to things and using his gait trainer this past year.  He has only been walking on his own for about 6 months.  He first started like a bull-rider (one hand in the air).  This might have been because he was used to family holding his hands while walking and it made him feel more secure.
  • Vocabulary - He speaks in complete sentences and even surprises family by singing songs on the radio!
  • Dance - Korbyn LOVES to dance.  His favorite song is “Greased Lightning” because of the dance (he started doing this in the car seat with his hands only).
  • Snap - He learned to snap his fingers and he loves to incorporate it into his dance moves!
  • Climb - He loves to climb up the ladder to the slide!  He is now learning how to climb ONTO furniture from the floor.  He can get down without assistance but getting UP on the furniture is still a chore for him.
  • Korbyn’s favorite things to do:  vacuum, sweep, take out the trash, dance and FACETIME with his family!

A few thing Korbyn is working on now:

  • Standing from a sitting position - While his confidence now allows him to bend his knees while standing (to reach something on the floor that he dropped), he still cannot go from sitting to standing without using his arms (pulling up on something or holding someone’s hand).
  • Jumping - Korbyn can jump if you hold his hands but cannot jump without assistance.
  • Climbing UP - onto furniture, beds, etc.

I saw that Korbyn started preschool this week.  I am so excited for Korbyn in this new journey.  Best of luck to you little man!  And best of luck to all of his family - I'm sure it's a hard transition - bittersweet.  I can't wait to see what this year holds for him!  And, thank you, for once again allowing me to document a little bit of his extraordinary life in pictures.

We are so blessed to have a front row seat to witness God's hand at work in Korbyn's life and to be able to celebrate these milestones with him. You are so right Michelle, it is Korbyn's determination and God's strength that allow him to continue to amaze everyone around him. He inspires us all. There are no words to describe how being this little miracle's Momaw makes me feel. Thank you for taking the time and sharing his story with your readers. We believe in miracles and want to share that hope...Korbyn's hope...God's hope with everyone that we come in contact with.
God Bless! Philippians 4:13
